{"id":3376,"date":"2016-05-31T06:00:17","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T11:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/?p=3376"},"modified":"2016-05-29T06:42:43","modified_gmt":"2016-05-29T11:42:43","slug":"may-27th-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/?p=3376","title":{"rendered":"May 27th, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg\"><img data-attachment-id=\"3382\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/?attachment_id=3382\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg?fit=351%2C143&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"351,143\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"download (4)\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg?fit=300%2C122&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg?fit=351%2C143&amp;ssl=1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3382\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg?resize=351%2C143\" alt=\"download (4)\" width=\"351\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg?w=351&amp;ssl=1 351w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.beerbusinessunplugged.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/download-4.jpg?resize=300%2C122&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>This past Friday, May 27<sup>th<\/sup>, was Jim Koch&#8217;s 67th birthday and, as we do every year we take this week to revisit Jim and Boston Brewing. \u00a02016 is a year in which we find Boston Beers in an unfamiliar position, a position which is driving pundits to question the future of the brewery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">Recently, Berenberg, the German firm, upgraded SAM from sell to hold. \u00a0Part of their change is that SAM&#8217;s share price has fallen 55% since its high in January 2015. \u00a0Berenberg goes on to say that SAM is ripe for a takeover considering the drop in share price, failure to turnaround core brands and that SAM has a &#8220;key asset&#8221; with their distribution network. \u00a0That in itself would be attractive to a large foreign investor\/brewery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">All of these points are well taken, but Berenberg also states that they believe Boston will soon begin to lose some SKUs in the off premise where they enjoy almost four SKUs more than the average craft brewer. \u00a0They estimate this reduction would mean an additional volume loss of -14.8%. \u00a0That is a big number!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">Boston is being squeezed on both sides of the craft spectrum. \u00a0Large companies ABI, MC, Constellation, and now Heineken, have purchased large, successful crafts and are pumping resources into these companies that were not previously available to them. \u00a0On the lower end of the spectrum, the local start-ups, who are new, are tied into their customers much more than a large national company as Boston is capable of doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">Considering all of the above, one wonders if, Boston left behind their core vision. \u00a0For years Jim was determined not to develop a light craft beer, however, he finally did, Sam Light, over 10 years ago which is still one of his better sellers. \u00a0While Boston had a number of flavors and specialty beers at that time, once Sam Light hit the market it almost seemed to open the door for a number of new products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">The question in this year is Boston trying to be all things to all people? \u00a0Has Boston lost its focus on its core business and gone to the extreme? \u00a0Would Boston have been better off by just focusing their IPA efforts on one, successful brand, Rebel, instead of adding two line extensions to Rebel? \u00a0No doubt the Rebel introduction was highly successful in the crowded IPA segment, but was a Rebel with a higher ABV and a lower ABV really smart?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">Twisted Tea, Travelers, and Angry Orchard can all be called successful, but in many ways have transformed Boston from a craft beer to a beverage company. \u00a0Not that there is anything wrong with this model, but clearly something is not working right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">One can bet that Boston is being closely watched by a number of possible acquirers including all the big boys. \u00a0If someone does get Boston, you can be assured that the landscape will change dramatically. \u00a0Boston will need to move quickly to bolster their stock and stave off any advances; however, it might be too late.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">This week next year when we look back at Boston Beers it will be interesting to see how all this unfolds, but until then, happy 67th birthday to Jim!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past Friday, May 27th, was Jim Koch&#8217;s 67th birthday and, as we do every year we take this week to revisit Jim and Boston Brewing. \u00a02016 is a year in which we find Boston Beers in an unfamiliar position, a position which is driving pundits to question the future of the brewery.
